Was it REALLY OURCU calling?

Agent O.T.T.O here with an important mission briefing!

Recently, we’ve seen a sharp increase in scammers impersonating OURCU and attempting to trick members into providing sensitive information. The scary part? These calls can sound incredibly convincing.

Imagine this: your phone rings, the caller ID says OURCU. The person on the other end sounds professional and tells you there may be fraud on your account. Naturally, you want to protect your money, so you stay on the line.

Then, they ask you for your full card number.

Next, they ask for the three-digit security code on the back of your card. Maybe they even ask for the one-time passcode that was just sent to your phone. At that moment, there’s one question every member should ask:

Was it REALLY OURCU calling me?

Unfortunately, scammers have become very good at making themselves look legitimate. They can make it appear that they’re calling from OURCU’s phone number. That’s why caller ID alone should never be considered proof that a call is genuine.

The good news is that knowing a few simple facts can dramatically reduce your chances of becoming a victim.

When OURCU contact members regarding potential fraud, we focus on protecting information, not collecting more of it. We will never call and ask you for your full card number, the security code on the back of your card, your PIN, online banking password, or a one-time passcode sent to your phone. We also won’t ask you to move your money, purchase gift cards, send cryptocurrency, or download software so we can “help” you with your account.

Scammers often create a sense of urgency, hoping you’ll react before you have time to think. They may tell you action is needed immediately or that your account is in danger. A legitimate OURCU representative understands that protecting your information is important and will never be upset if you decide to end the call and verify who you are speaking with.

If you are unsure, trust your instincts. Hang up and call OURCU directly on 800-426-5657. By placing the call yourself, you can be confident you’re speaking with a legitimate representative. It’s also important to remember that OURCU only has one official website: www.ourcu.com. If you receive a message directing you somewhere else, take a moment to pause and verify before clicking.

Fraud prevention works best when we work together. While OURCU continues to invest in protecting your accounts, one of the most powerful tools in fraud prevention is an informed member.

Remember, when in doubt, reach out!
