A Cup of Gratitude: OURCU and Sugar & Bean Coffee Co. Honor Wildland Firefighters at Sanderson Field

In the heart of the Pacific Northwest, where towering evergreens meet rugged terrain, bravery this summer wears the uniform of a wildland firefighter. As the Bear Gulch Fire near Lake Cushman continues to challenge crews with its unpredictable path and steep conditions, Our Community Credit Union (OURCU) has teamed up with Sugar & Bean Coffee Co. to offer a small but heartfelt gesture of thanks.

On August 22nd, OURCU and Sugar & Bean Coffee Co. partnered to provide complimentary coffee to the firefighting operation personnel stationed at Sanderson Field. These dedicated crews—many of whom have traveled from across the region—are working tirelessly to protect homes, forests, and lives. The coffee, served fresh and hot, is a simple token of appreciation for their courage and commitment.

To make the moment even more meaningful, OURCU team members created handwritten signs of thanks, which were displayed at the coffee stand. These personal messages—filled with gratitude, encouragement, and admiration—helped convey the deep appreciation felt by the community.

We know a cup of coffee doesn’t extinguish a fire, but it can offer a moment of comfort, a sense of community, a boost of energy, and most importantly, a reminder that we see and value the incredible work these crews are doing. HUGE THANKS to Deputy Colbenson from the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, for to brainstorm ideas of support and coordinating this special day with the fire crews.

Sugar & Bean Coffee Co., located at the entrance of Sanderson Field, known for their friendly staff and delicious, handcrafted drinks, was quick to join the effort.

The Bear Gulch base camp being set up right next to Sugar & Bean was definitely unexpected, but we couldn’t be more honored to serve the crews working so tirelessly to keep our community safe. It’s been a true privilege getting to know teams from across the country — from New York to California and becoming a small part of their journey.

The Bear Gulch Fire has burned over 8,257 acres and remains only 3% contained. The fire is situated in steep, mountainous terrain north of Lake Cushman, making suppression efforts especially challenging. Crews are using a combination of helicopter water drops, sprinkler systems, structure protection wraps, and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for infrared imaging to detect heat signatures.

The operation at Sanderson Field serves as a vital hub for personnel and logistics, and the coffee donation is a small but meaningful way to support those on the front lines.

OURCU’s mission has always been rooted in community support, and this initiative is just one example of how small acts of kindness can make a meaningful impact. Whether it’s through financial services or a cup of coffee, OURCU remains committed to standing with those who serve and protect.

To the crews at Sanderson Field: THANK YOU. Your bravery inspires us all!
